Alloderm Grafting: Upper Jaw Gum Graft Root CoveringGet the Flash Player to see this player.
Periodontal tunneling is a technically demanding but effective grafting procedure to augment or replenish lost or compromised tissue. In this video, the procedure is being used to augment and normalize gum tissue on several teeth that have early signs of minimal root coverage along the anterior areas of the upper jaw. (Click here to view this procedure performed on the lower jaw.) The patient's existing gum tissue does not have enough tough durable tissue to prevent further recession and bone loss. Tissue needs to be added to repair the damage and protect the maxillary bone so the teeth do not get loose. A tunneling procedure is superior to conventional gum grafting procedures because no incisions are made in the areas of recession. Incisions made during conventional gum grafting have the problem of increased rates of failure and scarring. A tunneling technique maintains the blood supply to the gum tissue which greatly increases the success rate and provides for a more esthetic result. See how the gingival tissues are left intact and the graft is advanced through the tunnel into precise locations. A proprietary suturing technique is used to create the normal snug fit for each anterior tooth while simultaneously lowering the gum line, thereby reversing the appearance of a minor receding gum line.
